Social Action Projects

Tikkun O’lam, Repairing the World Through Social Action

Social action is a core principal of Temple Kol Ami, and its members, young and old alike, have opportunities to make the world a better place. It’s living Judaism at its finest.

Helping Animals In Need of Adoption Find A Home
KAYAC Goes To The Dogs
On October 23, 2011, KAYAC will be volunteering at a large pet adoption event at the Franciscan Renewal Center. KAYAC is the Kol Ami Young Adult Club. To learn more, or to RSVP, CLICK HERE.
Feeding The Hungry – Gleaning Fruit
Every fall, members of Temple Kol Ami (children included) organize to pick fruit from local neighborhoods for the Food Banks of Phoenix. With the home owner’s pre-arranged permission, we spread out from yard to yard picking thousands of pounds of fresh citrus for those in need.
Helping the Homeless – Cooking at The Lodestar Shelter
There are 3.5 million homeless Americans and our hometown ranks in the top ten cities with the most homeless residents in the US. At least every other month during the fall, winter and spring, a group of TKA temple members and friends serve 800+ meals at the Lodestar Day Resource Center, a homeless shelter located at 12th Avenue and Jefferson here in Phoenix. We collect funds, purchase food, organize a BBQ and arrange entertainment for a group of people who could use a meal and some love.
Collecting Shoes for School Kids in Need – SOLE TRAIN!
We participate every year in a community-wide event to collect and distrubute athletic shoes for school children in need. Kol Ami’s twist is to make it a “Dance Party!” All you need is to bring a new pair of kid’s shoes, and that’s your ticket to food and entertainment, and a deserving child gets the shoes they need.
Helping In Time of Need – Cooking at The Ronald McDonald House
Throughout the year, members of Temple Kol Ami fulfill the mitzvah of visiting the sick by cooking for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Phoenix. We take the burden off of parents of seriously ill children by providing them with a home cooked meal and conversation. We cook on site, bringing groceries we have purchased from Temple funds designated for this project. If you like cooking and nuturing, this is a mitzvah for opportunity for you. Must be over the age of 16 for this project.
Stocking the Paradise Valley Food Bank – THE TURKEY TRAIN!
One of Kol Ami’s most anticipated annual events, The Turkey Train raises thousands of pounds of frozen whole turkeys for individuals and families in need during the Thanksgiving holiday. For a solid month prior, our members and religious school children bring in frozen turkeys, and on the day of the Turkey Train, the entire Religious School lets out early to form a brigade of kids passing frozen turkey after frozen turkey from the Kol Ami freezers to waiting cars who will whisk the turkeys to the food bank.

Book Drive
Temple Kol Ami is in the process of developing an event involving paperback books. We are collecting books for all ages!! As you clean out your closets, make room for your new Kindles or e-readers and free up some space, please think of Temple as a place to donate your used books. They will find very happy readers!!
Blanket Drive
This year we will be doing a blanket drive during the month of December. Please keep us in mind when you are out and about shopping. One blanket makes a world of difference.

This is just a sampling of the social action opportunities waiting for you at Temple Kol Ami. To become part of one or all of our projects click Volunteer and check the social action box on the form, or call the Temple Office 480-951-9660 for more information

Temple Kol Ami is pleased to announce that it has become an official partner with Valley Beit Midrash (VBM). VBM is a collaborative adult education program that brings new, exciting and relevant Jewish learning to the Greater Phoenix Jewish community in a diverse, welcoming, engaging and pluralistic setting.

In this course we will consider different theological responses to the horrors of the Shoah. From ultra-Orthodox rabbis writing at the time of the Shoah to scholars writing decades after the event, we will consider a wide range of responses to the fundamental questions posed by the holocaust.

Cost $60 for 5 sessions
